Work in Progress

Alongside the Chameleon (now in his new home), I’ve been working on a new version of The Afghan Girl from a photo by Steve McCurry, made famous on the front cover of National Geographic magazine some years ago. It’s the 5th version of this image I’ve made. It’s such a haunting image and I feel guilty about making money from this woman’s misery. However, I’ve always donated half the commission fee to McCurry’s charity (Afghanistan World Foundation) which takes Afghan girls and boys to educate them beyond the border. (God only knows what’s happening there now the Taliban are back in control?)

This work is destined for Australia for an April birthday. I hope it makes it in time!

It’s interesting that you are doing her. I have thought about doing her myself, but am more than a bit intimidated by your renditions of her. Such a beautiful girl!

My work was written about in a magazine called “Momentum” which is for, and about people with MS. I got a message from someone today who wants me to do her dog, after reading the article. Good thing I just finished the ducks for my dentist!

  2. Just to let your readers know that your Afghan Girl arrived in time and her new owner is in love with her😊🙏🏽 I understand too the sense of ‘guilt’ you speak about – our awe at one girl’s beauty magnified and confused by the thousands of real Afghan women waiting for a safe haven in places like Australia – many of whom will not arrive, certainly not in good time, some not ever. There is so much to think about, to wonder at, in the way you have remade this, one of the most emblematic images of our times!! Thank you.
